TATA Projects Wins Order for Bioethanol Plant in India

Indian infrastructure company TATA Projects has received an order from Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) for its second-generation bioethanol project in Bargarh, Odisha, India.

Proposed production capacity for the ethanol plant is 100,000 litres per day; the project is of considerable national significance, since the Indian Government is encouraging the production of cellulosic ethanol from agricultural resources to provide additional sources of income for farmers.

The project is expected to help address growing environmental concerns, as well as support the country’s Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) programme. The use of agricultural feedstock will also reduce air pollution from the burning of waste crops, the company noted.

Once complete, the bioethanol plant will produce fuel grade ethanol that meets specification IS 15464:2004, using domestic agro-based lignocellulosic feedstock. Rice straw will be used as the design feedstock, with maize stalk being used as the check case.

The company secured an additional three orders from HPCL Rajasthan Refinery Limited (HRRL), pertaining to various activities at HRRL’s proposed greenfield refinery/petrochemical complex in Rajasthan.
