Kolkata-headquartered Ordnance Factory Board (OFB), an industrial organisation under the Ministry of Defence, has significantly cut the cost of electricity consumption by generating solar power in its various units across the country.
The OFB comprises a family of 41 ordnance factories that are engaged in indigenous production of defence hardware and equipment.
The OFB aims to meet 45% of its total energy requirements through solar power. Towards achieving this goal, it is setting up grid-connected solar power projects in its various units.
“The use of solar power [generated from these projects] has significantly reduced OFB’s cost of electricity consumption from Rs 463.22 lakh during 2015-16 to Rs 163.78 lakh during 2018-19,” PTI quoted an official.
“As part of the ongoing efforts to promote ecologically sustainable growth to generate carbon-free clean energy and to reduce expenditure on electricity, the OFB is participating in the National Solar Mission to increase its solar power use to 45% of total consumption,” the official said.
The grid-connected solar power projects installed in various OFB units generated approximately 1,47,12,072.14 units of electrical power till November 2018.
