The outputs of many research and development efforts of our scientists result in something that benefits the society. Scientists at the National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) have developed surgical needles that have mirror-like surface finish. This output is the result of a collaborative project on “Development of an Electrolyte Formulation for Electropolishing of Stainless Steel Needles” in the year 2018/19 with /s Sutures India Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore for surgical needle applications.
Scientists at NAL, a CSIR institution, used electropolishing technology to remove irregularities and defects on the surface of needles using a mixture of phosphoric acid and sulphuric acid as an electrolyte.

Sutures India is India’s largest surgical sutures manufacturer and supplies its products to reputed hospitals and nursing homes. They have used the developed electrolyte formulation for electropolishing of their needles and supplied the polished needles to Cancer Care India trustee Dr. Kameshwari for deployment at a Cervical Cancer Screening Camp held for rural population in Bangalore, under its CSR programme.
