A total of 71 Indian institutions have qualified for the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2022, up from 63 last year, although none of them cracked the top 300 list.
The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, is India’s highest-ranked institution, maintaining its position in the 301-350 range for the third year in a row.
This year, 1,662 colleges are included in the enlarged rankings list, compared to 1,527 the previous year.
Thirty-five Indian institutions have made the top 1,000, the country’s second-highest total ever.
IIT-Ropar (351-400 band) is still in second place in India, as it was last year, but JSS Academy of Higher Education & Analysis is new to the list, being placed in the 351-400 band. IIT-Indore is rated fourth, with a score of 401 to 500.
Since last year, nine more Indian colleges have been recognised for the top-1,000 ranking. Alagappa University (501-600) was ranked among the top 600 universities in the world, and the Worldwide Institute of Data Expertise, Hyderabad (601-800) was ranked among the top 800. For the first time, the 801-1,000 band was filled by three universities: Kalasalingam Academy of Analysis and Training, Veltech University, and Symbiosis International University.
“In terms of popularity, publications, notably international co-authorship, and citations, India has made significant progress. The biggest relative improvements were shown in computer science, science and health, and business and economics when authors from all over the world collaborated. In arts and humanities, as well as business and economics, there has been considerable progress,” Mr. Phil Baty, chief information officer of Times Greater Training, stated in an email to ET. “However, in comparison to the rest of the globe, income has declined,” he continued.
The seven first-generation Indian Institutes of Expertise, including Delhi, Bombay, Kharagpur, and Madras, continue to be left off the list, having decided last year not to participate in international rankings due to data discrepancies and a lack of openness.
“Since they made their decision, Times Higher Education has contacted all the non-participating IITs to talk with them and focus on their concerns, nevertheless they’ve chosen once more to not participate in the rankings this 12 months. We believe that the IITs’ absence is detrimental to improving both individual institutions and India’s position and visibility on the global stage,” Mr. Baty said.
Times Higher Education, along with Quacquerelli Symonds (QS), is one of the two most prestigious rankings for higher education establishments in the world.
For the second year in a straight, the United States (8) and the United Kingdom (2) dominated the overall prime 10, with the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom holding the top place for the sixth consecutive year.
The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2022 list 1,662 universities from 99 countries and regions, up 136 from the previous year. The table is based on 13 performance metrics that assess an institution’s effectiveness in terms of teaching, research, data transfer, and global view.
