Indian Railways To Electrify Entire Railways Network by 2023
Indian Railways plans to be the world’s first railway network to run entirely on electricity, and be the first-ever ‘Net-Zero’ railway. The minister of Railways, Piyush Goyal has recently revealed that Indian Railways has started electrification of trains rapidly.
Goyal said, “By the year 2023, Indian Railways will be the first railways of the size and scale that we have, to be 100% electrically run.”
As per the minister, the Government is currently in the middle of phasing out the old coal plants, as this will play a big part in curbing pollution. This will also result in an increased demand for new plants, and get the cycle of investment running faster.
India Moving Towards Clean & Green Environment
The minister was speaking at the India Energy Forum by CERAWEEK, and he said the net total consumption will be all green despite there being a few challenges.
Currently, India is the topmost country after the US and China where emission of greenhouse gases is concerned. India is trying to reduce the pollution and its dependence on foreign oil. Electrification of the Indian Railways will definitely help the cause of India’s emerging green economy.
As per reports, there is an overall investment of Rs. 50 lakh crore required for the railway infrastructure, between the years between 2018 – 2030. This will also bring down the costs of logistics, which has been high by 16-18%.
The Indian Railways has already completed the electrification of 4,087 route km in 2017-18. The complete electrification of the railways networks will probably be done by 2021-22.
