In a significant push to country’s flagship programme Make in India, Indian Navy has set up a state-of-the-art Virtual Reality Centre (VRC) at its Directorate of Naval Design.
Navy chief Admiral Sunil Lanba inaugurated the centre that will provide a major boost to the indigenous warship design capabilities of Indian Navy. It will provide an impetus to self-reliance and greater fillip to warship construction.
During his address at the inauguration ceremony, Lanba complimented the Directorate for their untiring efforts, foresight and initiatives to conceptualise design and execute the project. “This project will facilitate collaborative design reviews for continuous interaction between the designers and the end users to improve design and ergonomics onboard warships,” Admiral Lanba said.
Directorate of Naval Design started in the 1960s and since then has made major contributions towards indigenous warship design capabilities of the Indian Navy, improving self-reliance for warship design and construction. The multi-disciplinary team has successfully developed 19 warship design, based on which over 90 platforms have been constructed to date.
Recently, INS Kadmatt participated in the 15th edition of Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA-19) in Malaysia on March 25. It is pertinent to mention that INS Kadmatt (P 29), an indigenous stealth anti-submarine warfare corvette, which was commissioned into the Navy in January 2016, had had a 90 per cent indigenous design, undertaken by the Directorate of Naval Design. It is named after one of the large islands from the Lakshadweep archipelago.
The ship is fitted with a state-of-the-art weapon system, sensors and machinery, heavy-weight torpedoes and an anti-submarine helicopter. The unique architecture used to fit the engines on a separate mounting reduces its underwater noise, thereby reducing the chances of it being detected by sonars of enemy ships and submarines.
