How Shakti, The ‘Indian’ Processor From IIT Madras, Could Challenge Global Majors Intel & AMD

Motivated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Make In India” concept, a team of researchers at IIT-Madras plans to take on global-majors Intel and AMD in the manufacture of computer processors. India’s first indigenous 64-bit microprocessor was designed and made by them as a secure hardware for the country’s strategic sectors replacing existing foreign monopoly.

Named ‘Shakti,’ means power, it is an open-source processor designed by the RISE group at IIT-Madras, which is building production grade processors and associated components like interconnect fabrics, verification tools, storage controls and peripheral IPs.

“The source codes of all the components of SHAKTI are open-sourced under the 3 part BSD license of University of California at Berkeley and will be royalty and patent-free, which means anyone can use, modify and distribute the code as long as it meets the license terms,” Arjun Menon, one of the lead architects of the design programme told Indian Science Journal.

പ്രധാനമന്ത്രി നരേന്ദ്രമോഡിയുടെ ‘Make In India’ എന്ന ആശയത്തിലൂന്നി ഐഐടി മദ്രാസിലെ ഗവേഷകരുടെ ഒരു സംഘം സ്വന്തമായി നിർമിച്ച കമ്പ്യൂട്ടർ പ്രോസസറിലൂടെ ഇന്റൽ, എഎംഡി എന്നിങ്ങനെ ഉള്ള ആഗോള കമ്പനികളും ആയി കൊമ്പു കോർക്കാൻ തയ്യാർ എടുക്കുന്നു . ഇന്ത്യയിൽ തന്നെ നിർമിച്ച 64-ബിറ്റ് മൈക്രോപ്രോസസർ ഇന്ത്യയുടെ ആദ്യത്തെ തദ്ദേശീയ മൈക്രോപ്രോസെസ്സർ ആണ് . ഇത് രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ സുരക്ഷക്കുള്ള വിവിധ ഉപകരണങ്ങളിൽ കോർത്തിണക്കാൻ ഏറെ അനുയോജ്യം ആണ്. മൈക്രോപ്രൊസസ്സർ രംഗത്തെ വിദേശ കുത്തകകളെ മാറ്റി നിർത്തി ഭാരതത്തിനു സ്വയം പര്യാപ്തത കൈവരിക്കാൻ ഇത് സഹായകം ആവും.

‘ശക്തി’ എന്ന വാക്കിന് ഊർജ്ജം എന്നാണ് അർഥം . ഐ ഐ ടി മദ്രാസിലെ “റൈസ് “ഗ്രൂപ്പ് ആണ് മൈക്രോപ്രൊസസ്സർ രൂപകൽപ്പന ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്നത്. ഇത് ഒരു ഓപ്പൺ സോഴ്സ് പ്രോസസറാണ്. ഇൻറർകണക്ട് ഫാബ്രിക് , വെരിഫിക്കേഷൻ ടൂൾസ്, സ്റ്റോറേജ് കൺട്രോളുകൾ, പെരിഫറൽ ഐ.പി. തുടങ്ങിയ പ്രൊഡക്ഷൻ ഗ്രേഡ് പ്രൊസസ്സറുകളും അനുബന്ധ ഘടകങ്ങളും ഈ ഗ്രൂപ്പ് നിർമ്മിക്കുന്നു.

“ശക്തി യുടെ എല്ലാ ഘടകങ്ങളുടെയും ഉറവിട കോഡുകൾ ബെർക്ലിയിലെ കാലിഫോർണിയ സർവകലാശാലയുടെ ബിഎസ്ഡി യുടെ മൂന്നാം അനുച്ഛേദത്തിന്ടെ കീഴിൽ ആണ് ലൈസൻസ് ചെയ്തിട്ടുള്ളത് . ഇത് റോയൽറ്റിയും പേറ്റൻറ് ഫ്രീയും ആയിരിക്കും, അതായത് ആ കോഡ് ലൈസൻസ് നിബന്ധനകൾ പാലിച്ചുകൊണ്ട്‌ ,ഉപയോഗിക്കാനും, പരിഷ്കരിക്കാനും, വിതരണം ചെയ്യാനും ആർക്കും കഴിയും. ” എന്ന് ശക്തി പ്രോസെസ്സറിന്റെ ഡിസൈൻ ടീമിന്റെ മുൻനിരയിൽ പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്ന ഒരാളായ അർജുൻ മേനോൻ ഇന്ത്യൻ സയൻസ് ജേർണലിനോട് പറഞ്ഞു.
