HAL to Upgrade Indian Coast Guard Dorniers

India’s Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) has given the green light for a mid-life upgrade of 17 of the country’s Dornier 228 twin-turboprop utility aircraft, following an announcement by India’s MoD on 27 October.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), India’s in-house aerospace and defense company, has been awarded the upgrade contract, once again demonstrating the government’s commitment to its Make in India programme.

The upgrades will target technology, as well as providing updated spares, and specialist test equipment and maintenance tools, and will look to cost India’s MoD approximately $129.96 million.

The 19-seater Dornier 228 features high maneuverability and can be used for special mission operations taking place between low level and 10,000ft, with 223kt cruising speeds and up to ten hours loitering

In India they are used by the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) to ensure protection of India’s maritime zones, including the surveillance of approximately 2.01million km₂ of the country’s exclusive economic zone. They also carry out troop transport, SAR as well as cargo and logistics support with these ICG-patrolled areas.

The upgrades follow the Bangladesh Navy’s announcement in 2017 that it had contracted two new Dornier 228 twin-turboprop aircraft from Swiss-based RUAG Aviation to add to its existing fleet.
