Vasco: While focusing on weapons platforms, Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) also plans to diversify its operations into ship repairs and manufacturing of composite products for the armed forces, said GSL chairman and managing director Bharat Bhushan Nagpal here on Thursday.
Nagpal said that GSL had inked an agreement with Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) for technology transfer for manufacturing of composite products. Nagpal made the statements after launching an Indian Coast Guard off-shore patrol vessel at the shipyard.
“Since we have a huge facility which was built for mine counter-measure vessels (MCMV), we have to try and see what other products we can develop here. We are considering domes, cradles and composites that are used on board submarines and ships, and those used by other armed forces,” said Nagpal.
A licence agreement was exchanged between GSL and DRDO for transfer of technology in composite technology, especially resin film infusion technology (RFIT) and vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM). Nagpal also said that GSL has opened an office at Karwar with the aim of bagging contracts for repairs and mid-life upgrades for warships.
In the current financial year, GSL has already repaired more than 10 ships of the Indian Navy, Coast Guard and commercial vessels.
Nagpal added that the shipyard is targeting the African and South East Asian market in its pursuit for expansion.
