The ongoing development work at Kasturchand Park sprung a major surprise on Thursday as workers at the site found four cannons and other cast iron pieces, dating back to Bhonsle rule in Nagpur. The cast iron cannons were found in the South of the pavilion located in the middle of the ground. They were just four feet under the ground. “It is an accidental discovery but quite a gem,” said Ashok Mokha, noted Architect.
Mokha is a member of Heritage Committee and consultant for ongoing beautification and development projects going on at Kasturchand Park. Digging work was going on for drainage purpose when workers stumbled upon the four cannons. Of them two are 10-feet-long while the other two are 9.5-feet-long. While the estimated weight could be over a tonne a piece.
“When the news reached us, we were stunned as these cannons are golden remains of our rich cultural and historical heritage. Condition of the cannons is not very good and most of them have rusted. But with the help of Archeological Survey of India, we can restore their glorious pride,” said Mokha. The cannons were used during war time by Bhonsles who ruled Nagpur and their empire reached upto Orissa (now Odisha), Bengal, Benaras and other places. Raghujiraje Bhonsle was the first to adorn the throne for the family that ruled Nagpur, an empire founded by Gond King Bakht Buland Shah.
Mokha said that according to primary estimates, the cannons date back to 1813 and Bhosles ruled Nagpur till 1853 before Biritishers took over. Divisional Commissioner Sanjeev Kumar, Collector Ravindra Thakre and Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar were briefed about the findings. The district administration contacted officials of Indian Army who reached the spot and took possession the cannons. Meanwhile, the contractor engaged for drainage work has been told to be cautious while carrying out further digging work. These cannons, post restoration, would add to the glory of Bhonsle empire.
