The Thar desert, in India, is the scene of an exciting and recent archaeological find: mysterious ancient drawings carved into the ground, on such an immense scale that they probably never could be fully glimpsed by those who made them, according to the researchers.
A scientific study of the material found during an excavation in Rajasthan has revealed that the Harappan people used to consume high-protein, multigrain ‘laddoos’ (food balls) around 4,000 years ago, which indicates that the inhabitants practised agriculture under good (wet) climatic conditions.
To protect, preserve & promote various forms of folk art and ancient folk cultures throughout the country including Jharkhand, Bihar and Kerala, the Government of India has set up seven Zonal Cultural Centres (ZCCs) with headquarters at Patiala, Nagpur, Udaipur, Prayagraj, Kolkata, Dimapur and Thanjavur. Jharkhand is the member State of Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre (EZCC), Kolkata; Bihar is the member State of North Central Zone Cultural Centre (NCZCC), Prayagraj and Kerala is the member State of South Zone Cultural Centre (SZCC), Thanjavur.
The paper, published in Nature journal ‘Scientific Reports’, said a Greek handbook for merchants compiled by an Alexandrian sailor in the 1st century CE identified Ozênê (Madhya Pradesh), Masalia (Andhra Pradesh) and Abêria (Between Barygaza and Ozênê) as places where cotton was produced.
Apart from handmade paper, Tawang is known for two other local crafts – handmade pottery and handmade furniture – that are also getting extinct with passage of time. KVIC Chairman announced that within six months plans will be rolled out for revival of these two local arts. “Revival of handmade pottery will be taken up on priority under Kumhar Sashaktikaran Yojana very soon,” Saxena said.
