Busy Year for Army as 248 Militants Killed, 58 Nabbed

The year 2018 has been a busy period for the Indian Army and other security forces in Kashmir. These forces have been carrying out the anti-militancy operations across the valley. As per the Army, at least 248 militants were killed this year, 58 others were arrested while five surrendered.

“This is the highest number of neutralisation[s] in last one decade. The credit for these operations goes to the freedom that was given to the security forces to work on the ground,” said Lt. Gen Anil Bhatt, GOC 15 corps.

Since the number of militants joining the groups had been on a rise the security forces have been devising various strategies to counter it. The security forces say the coordination between various agencies like the Army, the CRPF and the J&K police has been good which resulted in these successes.

“Security forces pose faith in each other while sharing information and carrying out specific operations against terrorists,” said Lt. Gen Anil Bhatt, GOC 15 corps.

Challenges

The security forces have also been facing many challenges this year. One of the biggest challenges has been the civilian killing during the operations. Around 100 civilians have also died in the year and out of which about 40 have been killed near encounter sites. The security forces say that the civilians deliberately come to the operation sites in order to save the militants and disrupt the operations.

The civilian population, however, during such incidents accuse the forces of using excessive force.

Controlling and minimising the civilian casualties have been one of the major concerns for the security forces because it results in more tension on the ground.
