Arunachal: CM Flags Off India’s Longest Steel Cable Bridge

The 300-m bridge over Siang river, located close to the China border, has been built at a cost of Rs 4,843 cr; to bolster country’s defence preparedness

Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Pema Khandu on Wednesday dedicated the country’s longest single-lane steel cable suspension bridge over river Siang (also known as Byorung Bridge) in Yingkiong to the people of the state.

Yingkiong, the headquarters of Upper Siang district, is around 389 km from state capital Itanagar and is close to the India-China border.

The CM said that the 300-m-long Byorung Bridge was built at a cost of Rs 4,843 crore and the same was funded by the Development of North Eastern Region ministry under Non-Lapsable Central Pool of Resources.

He said the bridge will now reduce the distance from Yingkiong to Tuting by almost 40 km, whose earlier road length was 192 km, and will also benefit about 20,000 people residing on both sides of the bank besides bolstering defence preparedness.

Stating that good connectivity is the way forward for state’s prosperity, the chief minister informed that the Centre has sanctioned 268 road projects worth Rs 3,800 crore under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) for the state. He said for Upper Siang district, two PMGSY projects has been sanctioned and are awaiting tender by this January.

The projects sanctioned are – 35-km road from Paling to Zido for Rs 82.10 crore and 30-km road from Zido to Bishing worth Rs 42.46 crore, Khandu added.

Responding to a public demand, the chief minister assured to make funds available for construction of a new circuit house and to provide Rs 1.5 crore as initial amount under Phase I with further assurance of more funding under Phase II.

For anti-erosion work for Yingkiong and Tuting, the chief minister announced to sanction Rs 10 crore. The chief minister also laid the foundation for construction of the district secretariat building.

Khandu was accompanied by deputy chief minister Chowna Mein, BJP state president Tapir Gao, health minister Alo Libang and legislators Pasang D Sona and Olom Panyang.
