Travelling in trains will become more silent and eco-friendly, as the Indian Railways is going to replace the two generator cars placed on either side of the trains with Head On Generation (HOG) system.
Under the HOG system, the power is drawn from an overhead electric supply system.
Addressing a press conference here, Railway Board Member (Rolling Stock) Rajesh Agarwal told reporters, “It has planned to convert all LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) trains to adopt the new environment-friendly HOG system within this year.”
He said that till date, 342 trains have already been converted into HOG, which has helped the national transporter save Rs 800 crore approx per year. Now, 284 more trains are to be converted by the year end.
While the first indigenous LHB coach was put into service by the Indian Railways in the year 2003, the decision to completely switch over to LHB technology was taken in 2017. From the financial year 2018-19 onwards, the Indian Railways production units have only been manufacturing LHB coaches instead of the conventional ICF designs.
Speaking further regarding HOG, the railway board member said: “Adoption of HOG conversion has been taken in mission mode to complete the work in time bound manner.”
According to the railway ministry official, the existent power generator cars make huge noise and emit fumes. However, the two generator cars will soon be replaced with one standby silent generator car for emergency situations.
The officer said that the other car will be replace by LSLRD (LHB Second Luggage, Guard and Divyaang compartment). This LSLRD will have the capability to convert power from the overhead supply to be utilised in the entire train, while providing space for luggage guard room and additional passengers.
“Currently, the cost of power is over Rs 36 per unit, and with HOG, it will be available at Rs 6 per unit,” he added.
Agarwal further pointed out that all new coaches from production units are to be HOG compliant.
“The conversion work has been allotted to Zonal Railways and with the dedicated efforts of field officers. This will provide noise free and environment friendly travel for passengers at stations,” he revealed.
Till date, 13 Rajdhani Express, 14 Shatabdi Express, 11 Duranto Express, six Sampark Kranti Express, 16 Humsafar Express and 282 other mail and express trains have been converted to the new HOG system.
