CHANDIGARH: Gaganyaan – India’s first manned mission to space – will be tested in the wind tunnel facility at National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) in Bangalore, a laboratory of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). Director general (DG) CSIR, Dr Shekar Mande explained about the role of CSIR in the indigenous mission on Friday during his visit at the Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH).
“The mission is complex and needs collaboration between CSIR, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for achieving the objective. CSIR will play a vital role in design of the space shuttle which will be tested in the wind tunnel facility at NAL,” said the DG CSIR.
He said, “The cost of testing the design overseas is very high and there is a long waiting list as well. Every missile developed by the DRDO or new aircraft made in the country has gone through the wind tunnel facility at the NAL.”
The CSIR shall study the aerodynamics for refining design of the space shuttle. “It shall also help the ISRO in the advisory role for training of astronauts and all the safety measures required in the space mission,” said Dr Mande.
